The fifth day of the 2026 Shehu Week commemoration in Katsina was marked on Thursday with a series of scholarly lectures, Qur’anic recitations, and devotional activities in honour of the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse (R.A.).
The day’s proceedings, dedicated to the Shurafa (descendants of the Prophet Muhammad), brought together leading Sharifs and Islamic scholars from across Nigeria. The programme opened with special prayers, followed by the recitation of the Holy Qur’an and continued with lectures, in line with activities held since the commencement of the week-long event.
The first lecture was delivered by the Mufti of the Shurafa of Nigeria, Sheikh Sharif Barhama Sha’aban of Gusau, who spoke on the topic “Who Are the Shurafa and Their Continuity Until the End of Time.” The presentation was reviewed by Sharif Bello Banyo, Sarkin Sharifan Gwale and Secretary-General of the Council of Shurafa Chiefs of Nigeria.
Sheikh Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Sufi of Sokoto later led a session of remembrance (zikr), after which Sayyadi Mustapha Mai Diwani rendered poetic verses from the diwan of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse.
The second lecture was presented by the Sarkin Sharifan Zamfara and Chairman of the Council of Shurafa Chiefs of Nigeria, Sheikh Dr. Sharif Nura Ibn Abdulmajid. He spoke on “The Relationship Between Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse and the Shurafa.”
This was followed by another zikr session led by Abba Bashir, during which members of the family of the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi (R.A.) arrived at the venue. Among them were Sheikh Abubakar Surunbai, Sheikh Nasir, and Sayyadi Ali, who rendered Qur’anic recitation reminiscent of the late Sheikh’s tafsir sessions. Speaking on behalf of the family, Sheikh Surunbai expressed gratitude to attendees for their support, prayers, and solidarity.
In his remarks, he disclosed that Khalifa Ibrahim, son of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, had extended a hand of reconciliation to all followers, representatives, and disciples across Nigeria, emphasizing that the gesture was aimed at reinforcing the Tijjaniyya ideals of peace, unity, and mutual love.
After the Zuhr prayers, devotional chants in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) were performed, including renditions by Malam Usman Jari. The programme also witnessed the arrival of members of the Inyass family, including Sayyida Ummuhani, daughter of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse, accompanied by her children.
A lecture earlier scheduled to be delivered by Sayyida Zahra’u Abubakar Chota was presented on her behalf by Sayyadi Aliyu Uthman Bashir Inyass. The paper focused on “The Teachings of Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass Al-Kaulakhi on Upholding Truth and Adherence to the Prophetic Sunnah.” The session was chaired by Sayyida Ummuhani, while the commentary was provided by her daughter, Sayyida Barakatu Usman Bashir Niasse.
Another lecture, delivered on behalf of Imam Muhammad Suru by Dr. Abdullahi Jungudu, examined “Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass Al-Kaulakhi: His Character and Islamic Mission in Non-Muslim Lands.” The commentary was given by the Sarkin Sharifan Malumfashi, Sheikh Sharif Habibu Muqaddam.
Before the final lecture, Sharif Saleh of Jos rendered poetic verses in praise of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse. The concluding lecture was delivered on behalf of Sheikh Prof. Abubakar Abubakar Yagawal by his son, Dr. Habibu Abubakar Yagawal, on the topic “Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass Al-Kaulakhi Between His Admirers and Critics.” Dr. Isma’il Lawal Mara provided scholarly commentary.
The day’s activities ended with the recitation of Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse’s diwan and special prayers offered for Sheikh Sani Khalifa Abdulkadir of Zariya, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, and other departed scholars.
Organisers announced that activities would resume on Friday morning for the conclusion of the Shehu Week 2026 commemorative programme in Katsina.
